Atlantic Fire Services delivered an unforgettable day of fire safety education and hands-on training at Oranjekloof Moravian Primary in Hout Bay, where more than 1,100 learners and 20 teachers came together for a powerful, life-changing experience.

The school was filled with energy as learners engaged in practical demonstrations, learning critical life-saving skills such as Stop, Drop & Roll and how to crawl low through smoke-filled spaces to escape safely. These lessons, simple yet vital, are designed to prepare children for real-life emergencies where quick thinking can save lives.

A major highlight of the day was the training of 30 Junior Fire Marshals — young leaders who stepped forward to take on the responsibility of promoting fire safety within their school and community. These learners are now equipped to identify risks, raise the alarm, and lead by example when it matters most.

“On behalf of the school and the principal, we would love to welcome Atlantic Fire and thank you for training our learners,” a teacher shared.
“This knowledge will not only stay here — learners can take it home, share it with their families, and even help during times of fire in our community.”

The reality of fire risk is deeply personal for many learners, with recent fires affecting families within the community. Addressing the school after the training, the principal reinforced the importance of awareness and responsibility:

“I hope you have learned something today. Must we play with fire? No. We don’t play with fire. If you see a fire, what must you do? Call someone immediately — your teacher, your parents. Some of you have experienced fires, so now you know what to do. Be careful and stay safe.”

The impact of the day was clearly felt by the learners themselves, who responded with enthusiasm and gratitude:

“Thank you for the opportunity to train us on what to do when there is a fire,” one learner shared.
