SAFEGUARDING OUR COMMUNITIES

The Social and Economic Impact of Fire in Informal Settlements. Fire Destroys More Than Structures.

The Human Cost of Fire

Losing your home and all your belongings to a fire has an absolutely devastating impact on a family.

It is one of the most traumatic things that can happen in a persons life.

Cape Town is South Africa’s โ€œfire capitalโ€.

2015 – 2026: +70,000 Homes Lost. +350,000 Lives Changed. +3,000 Deaths

Data of township and informal settlement fire’s are inconclusive as many fires are not reported.

Homes destroyed by fires in townships and informal settlements create significant social, economic, and psychological consequences that extend well beyond the immediate destruction of property.

Every fire in an informal settlement represents more than the loss of structuresโ€”it threatens livelihoods, education, dignity, and hope. In communities already facing poverty and unemployment, fire destruction can set families back for years.ย

Psychological and Emotional Trauma

Families often lose their homes and possessions within minutes.

Children experience trauma, anxiety, and disruption to their sense of safety and security.
Communities may live with the ongoing fear of future fires.

Economic Impact
Most affected households have no insurance or financial safety net.
Fires destroy essential possessions, identity documents, tools, and small business assets.
In communities with high unemployment, replacing these items can take months or years

Impact on Education

Learners often lose school uniforms, books, stationery, and study materials.
Displacement and emotional distress can negatively affect attendance and academic performance

Community Vulnerability
Informal settlements are among the most economically vulnerable communities in South Africa.
Dense housing, combustible materials, and limited emergency access contribute to rapid fire spread and increased losses.
