Fire Hydrant Cleaning
& Maintenance

Keeping Critical Firefighting Infrastructure Ready When It Matters Most

A fire hydrant is the most important sources of water during an emergency — but only if firefighters can find it, access it and use it.

Atlantic Fire Services works with communities to clean, test, identify and map local fire hydrants, while addressing visibility and accessibility issues that can affect emergency response.

From hydrants hidden beneath concrete and rubble to vandalised and overgrown infrastructure, our teams work to identify these risks and help keep hydrants visible, accessible and ready for emergencies.

A Fire Hydrant Needs to Be Ready Before the Fire Starts

When a fire breaks out, there is no time to discover that a hydrant is blocked, hidden, damaged or difficult to locate.

Supporting the functionality of local firefighting infrastructure is therefore an important part of community fire preparedness.

Atlantic Fire Services regularly works in communities to clean and maintain fire hydrants, conduct risk assessments, test hydrants, improve visibility and map their locations.

Our work includes hydrants that have been:

  • Hidden beneath concrete and rubble
  • Obstructed by surrounding debris
  • Vandalised
  • Difficult to see at night
  • In need of cleaning
  • In need of repainting
  • Previously unidentified or unmapped

Our goal is simple: help make sure critical firefighting infrastructure can be located and accessed when it is needed most.

THE PROBLEM

Hidden, Damaged or Vandalised Hydrants Create Additional Risk

Fire can spread incredibly quickly, particularly in densely populated communities.

Every obstacle firefighters face during an emergency can make the response more difficult.

Hydrants can become difficult to use because of:

Vandalism

Damaged hydrants may be difficult or unsafe to operate.

Concrete & Rubble

Some hydrants can become partially or completely covered by construction material, rubble or surrounding development.

Dirt & Debris

Accumulated dirt, rubbish and vegetation can make hydrants difficult to locate and access.

Poor Visibility

A hydrant that cannot easily be seen — particularly at night — can delay firefighters trying to establish a water supply.

Lack of Mapping

If hydrant locations are not accurately identified and mapped, finding them during an emergency can become more challenging.

WHAT WE DO

Clean. Test. Paint. Map.

Our Fire Hydrant Cleaning & Maintenance Programme focuses on practical actions that can improve community fire preparedness.

CLEAN

Our teams clean hydrants and clear surrounding areas where possible so that the infrastructure can be identified and accessed more easily.

TEST

Hydrants are tested to help identify whether they are functioning and to highlight problems that may require further attention.

PAINT

Hydrants are repainted using reflective paint to improve visibility. This is particularly important after dark, when locating a hydrant quickly can be more difficult.

MAP

Hydrant locations are mapped to create a clearer picture of available firefighting infrastructure within the community.

ASSESS

We conduct fire-risk assessments around identified areas and infrastructure to better understand potential challenges during an emergency.

REPORT

Where problems require intervention beyond our programme's scope, relevant issues can be documented and communicated to the appropriate responsible authorities or stakeholders.

WHY THIS PROGRAMME MATTERS

Preparedness Starts Before the Emergency

A fire hydrant may sit unnoticed for months or years.

But when a fire starts, it is one of the most important parts of emergency response.

Our Fire Hydrant Cleaning & Maintenance Programme helps address simple but important questions:

  • Can we find it?
  • Can we access it?
  • Can we identify its condition?
  • Is it visible at night?
  • Is its location known?
  • Has it been affected by vandalism or obstruction?

By addressing these questions before an emergency, communities can be better prepared for when they need to act.

Protect the Infrastructure That Helps Protect Us

Fire hydrants are more than pieces of infrastructure.

They are a critical resource when a community is facing a fire.

By cleaning, testing, painting and mapping hydrants — and by working with communities to protect them from vandalism and obstruction — Atlantic Fire Services is helping strengthen fire preparedness where it matters most.

Because when fire strikes, there is no time to start preparing.
