High-Risk Fire, Gugulethu Homes Saved by AFS

A potentially devastating fire in Gugulethu was successfully contained on 9 December 2025, thanks to the rapid response and decisive action of Atlantic Fire Services (AFS).

While returning from a firefighter training session in Khayelitsha, the AFS team noticed a fast-moving blaze burning dangerously close to homes along the railway line. With flames already pressing against the walls of nearby structures, the situation posed an immediate and serious threat to residents.

Without hesitation, both AFS Rapid Response Land Cruiser units were deployed. For the first time in an active incident, AFS activated its newly introduced CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System). The system delivered a powerful and effective knockdown, playing a critical role in stopping the fire’s advance.

Through swift coordination, disciplined teamwork, and the effective use of specialised equipment, the fire was contained before a single home was lost.

This incident once again highlights the importance of preparedness, rapid response, and continuous training — especially during Cape Town’s high-risk fire season.

Swift action. Strong teamwork. Lives and property protected.
Salute to the team.
