Atlantic Fire & Rescue – Khayelitsha Site B, BM Section Training Day
What an incredible day of action and unity in Khayelitsha, Site B, BM Section, as Atlantic Fire & Rescue (AFR)joined forces with community leaders and residents to empower locals in one of Cape Town’s most fire-prone areas.
The event saw 50 new volunteers trained in fire awareness, fire safety, and practical use of 9kg DCP fire extinguishers. From this training, seven new community fire response teams were established — strategically placed throughout the area to ensure faster reaction times and improved safety in the event of a fire emergency.
To equip these new teams, Atlantic Fire & Rescue donated 30 fire extinguishers and 12 first aid kits. These essential resources will enable residents to respond effectively to fires and medical emergencies before professional services arrive — saving lives, protecting property, and strengthening community resilience.
“We’re here with the community leaders and the community of BM Section. The new volunteers will form teams that will protect this area. We trained them in fire awareness, fire safety, and the practical use of fire extinguishers,” said AFR Commander Paul Krüger.
“This is a very high-risk area, and these teams will be spread out all along the section to react quickly and shorten the response time in case of a fire.”
A community leader expressed heartfelt gratitude for the training and equipment provided, emphasizing how critical this support is as the community approaches Cape Town’s summer fire season.
“As BM Section residents, we have a huge problem with fires, especially in summer. We thank you for everything you’ve done — for the fire extinguishers and first aid kits. You’re helping us protect our community,” they said.
Through this collaboration, Atlantic Fire & Rescue continues its mission to empower communities through knowledge, equipment, and teamwork — fostering a spirit of ownership and preparedness that saves lives.
“This is what love, dedication, and community protection look like in motion,” said Commander Krüger.
“To our volunteers — AFR salutes you!”
