Atlantic Fire & Rescue - Imizamo Yethu Training Day 6

Empowering Communities to Protect What Matters Most

Another incredible day of community empowerment took place in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, where Atlantic Fire & Rescue (AFR) hosted the 6th Fire Awareness and Safety Training Day — focused on strengthening local readiness and resilience against fires.

The day brought together a passionate and proactive group of residents:

  • 15 new volunteers eager to serve their community
  • 10 current team leaders and experienced volunteers
  • 38 children who participated in fire awareness education

Together, they received hands-on training in fire awareness, fire safety, and the optimal use of 9kg fire extinguishers, gaining vital knowledge that could one day save lives and homes.

To support the ongoing community protection effort, AFR donated 30 new fire extinguishers, distributed among the teams that have already been formed in Imizamo Yethu. These teams will be stationed across the area, ensuring a faster response time and better fire containment before professional firefighters arrive.

“We just completed training for existing and new volunteers in Imizamo Yethu,” said AFR Commander Paul Krüger.
“I now want to hand over 30 fire extinguishers to the different teams that will protect this area, shorten the response time in case of a fire, and stop the spread of these devastating fires.”

A local community leader expressed heartfelt gratitude for the continued support:

“We would like to say thanks to Mr. Paul. He helped us a lot. We’ve experienced many fire incidents here in Hout Bay, in Imizamo Yethu. Thank you very much.”

The training also included a special youth session where 38 children were taught the basics of fire awareness — inspiring the next generation to take safety seriously and be part of a safer, more prepared community.

Atlantic Fire & Rescue remains deeply committed to empowering communities to safeguard and protect their loved ones, homes, and neighbourhoods through education, equipment, and teamwork.

Together, we protect. Together, we empower.
