Rapid AFS Response - Contained Athlone Veld Fire
A potentially catastrophic veld fire was swiftly contained by Atlantic Fire Services on 19 December 2025, preventing danger to motorists and surrounding communities near Athlone Stadium.
Earlier that day, the AFS team was conducting routine inspections at Satellite Fire Stations and replacing three fire extinguishers that had been used the previous night to contain another fire. While travelling along Klipfontein Road, the team spotted thick smoke rising from a veld fire burning opposite Athlone Stadium.
The situation was immediately identified as high risk. Dense smoke caused near-zero visibility on one of the area’s busiest roads, placing motorists, pedestrians, and nearby properties in imminent danger. With traffic moving through severely reduced visibility, the potential for serious accidents and fire spread was critical.
Without hesitation, AFS deployed three Rapid Response Land Cruiser units to the scene. The team moved in quickly, establishing control lines and attacking the fire before it could spread further or result in injuries or collisions. Through coordinated teamwork and decisive action, the fire was successfully contained and the area made safe.
The rapid response restored visibility on Klipfontein Road and removed the immediate threat to road users and nearby infrastructure. This incident once again highlights the importance of constant vigilance, preparedness, and fast-moving fire response — especially during Cape Town’s high-risk fire season.
Swift action saves lives.
Salute to the team.
