Atlantic Fire & Rescue – Mfuleni Fire Response Report

While en route to replace fire extinguishers at one of our satellite fire stations, the Atlantic Fire & Rescue (AFR) team noticed smoke rising from an area in Mfuleni. Without hesitation, the team diverted to investigate.

Upon arrival, they discovered a rubbish dump and surrounding reeds in a small vlei burning. This particular vlei had a tragic history — just a few years ago, a similar fire spread rapidly through the area, destroying seven informal homes.

With that memory fresh in mind, the AFR crew quickly deployed their armoured Land Rover, equipped with multiple fire extinguishers, to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading across the vlei.

Once the blaze was under control, the City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue Service was called in. Their response was fast, professional, and highly coordinated. The arriving firefighters took full command of the situation and ensured the area was completely safe.

“The CoCT Fire Brigade’s quick arrival and professionalism made all the difference,” said an AFR team member.
“We were able to stop the vlei from burning again — together.”
