Atlantic Fire and Rescue - Fire Response in Driftsands

Salute to Our Firefighting Heroes

On 4 November 2025, while returning to headquarters after a community training session, the Atlantic Fire & Rescue (AFR) team noticed smoke rising from two separate areas in Driftsands. Without hesitation, the team responded immediately — embodying the AFR mission of protecting communities wherever the need arises.

Upon arrival, AFR crews met up with City of Cape Town (CoCT) Firefighters from both the Kuils River and Macassar fire stations. Offering their assistance, AFR joined forces with the CoCT teams to assess and contain the blaze.

To their admiration, they discovered that three CoCT firefighters had already crossed a massive sand dune — on foot — through dense bushland, to reach and extinguish the fire. Their determination, teamwork, and courage prevented the blaze from spreading further into the surrounding area, safeguarding nearby homes and natural habitat.

“These firefighters are true heroes,” said an AFR spokesperson.
“The terrain was difficult, the access nearly impossible — yet they walked the distance, faced the fire head-on, and got the job done. We salute their bravery and dedication.”

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifice and resilience of South Africa’s firefighting teams — both professional and volunteer — who risk their lives daily to protect communities across the Cape.

Atlantic Fire & Rescue extends heartfelt gratitude and respect to the City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue Service, especially the crews from Kuils River and Macassar stations, for their unwavering professionalism and service.

To the firefighters who crossed that dune — you are heroes.
We see you. We salute you.
