Samora Machel Training Day

In a powerful display of community spirit and collaboration, Atlantic Fire & Rescue joined forces with the City of Cape Town, Ward 33 Councillor Mr. Lungisa Somdaka, SAPS Station Commander Lt. Col. Senaya, Mr. Xolani Joja(Informal Settlement Official), CPF members, neighbourhood watches, and community leaders to host a Fire Awareness and Safety Training Day in Samora Machel, Cape Town.

The initiative brought together 140 new volunteers from the local community who received training in fire awareness, fire safety, and the use of 9kg DCP fire extinguishers. These volunteers will form the backbone of a local emergency response network—equipped with the knowledge and tools to respond swiftly to fires in high-risk areas, especially during Cape Town’s challenging summer fire season.

To further support this vital community initiative, Atlantic Fire & Rescue donated 30 fire extinguishers and 10 first aid kits. These resources will be used by newly formed community safety teams to help protect homes and save lives in the event of an emergency.

“It is very important for us to empower the community to be able to stop these fires and respond as soon as possible so that we don’t have devastating fires destroying people’s houses and lives,” said Paul Krüger commander of Atlantic Fire & Rescue during the event.

The initiative was met with gratitude and enthusiasm from local leaders. Councillor Somdaka praised the timing of the program, noting its importance as the fire season approaches. Station Commander Lt. Col. Senaya expressed her appreciation, calling the event a new beginning for the Samora Machel communities.

“I believe this is just the starting point. Samora won’t be the same again. We are moving forward with power, with energy, with a positive mind,” she said.

The event also symbolized unity and hope within the community. Leaders emphasized that despite the area’s challenges, residents are standing together, taking responsibility, and actively working to protect their neighbours and homes.

This initiative forms part of Atlantic Fire & Rescue’s ongoing commitment to empower communities through training, awareness, and practical support. By equipping residents with life-saving skills and resources, the organization continues to make a tangible difference in reducing fire risks and enhancing community resilience.

Atlantic Fire & Rescue salutes the volunteers, leaders, and partners who made this day possible. Together, we are building a safer future—one community at a time.
