Sentinel Primary Breaks School Evacuation Record After Fire Safety Training

Atlantic Fire Services recently spent an exciting and educational day at Sentinel Primary School in Hout Bay, where learners and teachers took part in an important fire safety training session followed by a full school evacuation drill.

The drill formed part of Atlantic Fire Services’ ongoing commitment to improving fire awareness and emergency preparedness in schools and communities across the Western Cape. After the training session, the school put their knowledge into action by conducting a timed evacuation to test how quickly learners and staff could safely exit the buildings in the event of a fire.

The results were impressive.

Sentinel Primary achieved a new evacuation record of just 2.3 minutes, significantly improving on their previous evacuation time of 4.5 minutes. The drill demonstrated not only the speed of the response but also the calm and organised manner in which learners and teachers moved to their designated safety areas.

Atlantic Fire Services commended the school for their excellent performance and preparedness.

Atlantic Fire Services:
“Very good evacuation. We’re very impressed with the speed and control. Well done, Sentinel!”

Teachers at the school also shared their appreciation for the training and the experience it brought to learners.

Teacher:
“Thank you for the lekker excitement!”

Fire evacuation drills play a critical role in ensuring that learners and educators know exactly what to do during an emergency. In a real fire situation, every second counts, and a well-practised evacuation can make the difference between chaos and a safe, controlled exit.

By practising these drills regularly and reinforcing fire safety awareness, schools can ensure that both staff and learners are prepared to act quickly and responsibly if a fire occurs.

The successful drill at Sentinel Primary highlights the importance of ongoing fire safety education in schools, ensuring that young learners grow up understanding the importance of preparedness and safety.

With their new record evacuation time, Sentinel Primary has demonstrated that they are not only learning about safety — they are ready to act when it matters most.
