Future Fire Marshals in the Making at Sentinel Primary

An exciting and empowering day unfolded at Sentinel Primary School in Hout Bay as Atlantic Fire Services (AFS) invested in the next generation of community protectors — young learners stepping up as future fire marshals.

The training session brought together learners and teachers for a hands-on experience in fire awareness, fire safety, and the practical use of fire extinguishers. At the heart of the day was a proud milestone: nine learners were officially trained as Junior Fire Marshals, taking on the important responsibility of helping to keep their school safe.

These young leaders were equipped with the knowledge to identify fire risks, act quickly in emergencies, and alert teachers to ensure that the fire department is contacted without delay. Their role is simple but critical — to be alert, responsible, and ready when every second counts.

Teachers also played a key role in the training, actively participating in practical fire extinguisher exercises to strengthen the school’s overall emergency preparedness. By equipping both learners and educators, the programme ensures a coordinated and effective response in the event of a fire.

Commander Paul Krüger encouraged the learners to embrace their new roles with responsibility and leadership:

“You did very well — you did a really good job. But you must remember now, you are responsible when there are no teachers around. If there is a fire, you must always go and call a teacher as quickly as possible.
So that the fire department can be called. The fire department must always be called.”

He emphasised the importance of teamwork and immediate action during emergencies:

“If there is a fire, one of you can try to put it out, and two or three of you should help. The others must go and call the teachers. It must be reported immediately.
You must be responsible, and you must set an example for the other children.”

The day was filled with energy, learning, and enthusiasm, proving that fire safety education can begin at a young age — and that young people, when empowered, can play a meaningful role in protecting lives.

Through initiatives like this, Atlantic Fire Services continues to build safer schools and stronger communities — one learner, one teacher, and one prepared response at a time.
