Future Fire Leaders in Action | Hout Bay High School, Hangberg

We had an incredible and energetic day at Hout Bay High School in Hangberg, where we brought fire awareness, fire safety, and fire marshal training directly to the next generation of community protectors. With 30 learners and 5 teacherstaking part, the day was filled with learning, hands-on experience, and powerful real-world insight into firefighting.

As Atlantic Fire Services, we introduced ourselves not just as firefighters, but as a volunteer-driven, non-profit organisation working on the frontlines of some of the highest-risk areas across Cape Town. Much of our work focuses on informal settlements, where fires are increasing rapidly due to dense living conditions, limited access, and the growing use of highly flammable synthetic materials.

We shared a clear message with the learners: fires today burn faster, hotter, and more dangerously than ever before. With more people moving into high-risk areas and homes built closer together, the need for awareness and early response has never been more critical.

The session went beyond theory. Learners were taught how and when to use a fire extinguisher, and the importance of becoming fire marshals within their school — supporting teachers, raising alarms, and helping guide safe evacuations during emergencies.

We also gave learners an up-close look at the tools we use on the ground. From the powerful Jaws of Life (hydraulic rescue tools) used to cut through vehicles and force open doors, to the Ram-Jack system used to lift heavy objects in rescue situations, learners saw firsthand how lives are saved in critical moments.

One of the highlights was showcasing our Portable CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System) unit, explaining how compressed air and foam are used to fight fires effectively. We also demonstrated the use of breathing apparatus — showing how firefighters enter smoke-filled environments safely, how air supply is monitored, and why teamwork is essential in every operation.

These real-life demonstrations brought the world of firefighting to life, turning curiosity into understanding and respect for the profession.

Throughout the day, one message stood out clearly: preparedness saves lives. By equipping learners with knowledge and practical skills, we are building a generation that is ready to act, lead, and protect when it matters most.

To end off a successful and engaging training session, we were proud to sponsor lunch for the learners — a small way to thank them for their enthusiasm, participation, and willingness to learn.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Hout Bay High School for their warm welcome and eagerness to engage with such an important topic.

Together, we are not just teaching fire safety — we are building future fire leaders. Together, we protect communities
