On 16 December 2025, flames tore through Makhaza, Khayelitsha, threatening to turn yet another community into ashes. In moments like these, time stands still — and every second decides whether families lose everything or whether hope survives the fire.

As the blaze took hold, community volunteers were first on scene, armed not with fire engines, but with AFS-issued fire extinguishers and the courage to act. With fire racing through tightly packed structures, volunteers moved fast, managing to contain two flanks of the fire and slowing its destructive advance before it could spread further into the settlement.

When the City of Cape Town Fire Brigade arrived, they took over and successfully extinguished the blaze. But by then, the fire had already left its mark.

Seven homes were lost.

Behind that number are families standing in shock, watching years of memories, belongings, and shelter disappear in minutes. In the video footage from the scene, a woman’s heartbreaking cries echo through the smoke as flames engulf her home — a raw reminder of the human cost of fires in informal and high-density communities.

This is the true devastation of community fires.
Not just burning structures — but lost safety, lost stability, and shattered dignity.

The socio-economic impact is severe. Families are displaced overnight. Children lose their school uniforms and books. Breadwinners lose their tools of trade. Entire households are pushed deeper into vulnerability, forced to rebuild with little or nothing left behind.

Yet amid the destruction, one truth is undeniable:
Without the intervention of trained community volunteers and AFS-donated fire extinguishers, the devastation would have been far worse.

Early action slowed the fire. Courage and preparation saved neighbouring homes. Lives were protected because people were empowered to respond before it was too late.

This incident stands as both a warning and a call to action.

Fires in high-risk communities are not isolated events — they are recurring crises. But fire awareness, training, and access to basic firefighting equipment save lives. Empowered communities become the first and most critical line of defence.
