While returning from a volunteer training session in Khayelitsha, the Atlantic Fire & Rescue team witnessed a massive blaze in Kanana, Gugulethu. Without hesitation, the crew crossed a stormwater ditch, deployed fire hoses from their response Cruiser, and used six fire extinguishers to help contain the fire before it could spread further into the community.

Moments later, Cape Town Fire & Rescue arrived on scene — quick, efficient, and ready to take command. Through the joint efforts of the two teams, the fire was successfully contained, preventing even greater destruction.

Unfortunately, despite the rapid response, over 40 homes were destroyed, leaving more than 200 residents displaced. The devastation was immense — families lost their homes and belongings overnight. Yet amid the heartbreak, the spirit of community resilience and unity shone brightly.

“It’s a very sad situation. Everything inside is destroyed. People are trying to rebuild. We are now working with local community leaders to roll out our training and support program in this area as well,” said a spokesperson from Atlantic Fire & Rescue on the scene.

Standing alongside the team was Michael, the Fire Marshal for the Community Fire Brigade from Stangeli Bos, located about a kilometer away. Michael emphasized the urgent need for proactive fire prevention measures.

“The report we received was that the firefighting units took more than an hour to respond. If we had other alternatives, we believe this could have been avoided. Working with Atlantic Fire & Rescue, we want to make sure fire extinguishers are nearby to prevent similar tragedies,” he said.

Recognizing the urgency, Atlantic Fire & Rescue announced that they will return to Kanana in the coming week to conduct community fire awareness and extinguisher training, as well as donate 35 fire extinguishers to the area. This initiative forms part of their Community Volunteer Program, which equips local residents with the knowledge and tools to respond quickly in fire emergencies — a crucial step in safeguarding vulnerable settlements during Cape Town’s high-risk summer season.

“It’s December, the season for fires. We need to take proactive steps now to avoid further devastation,” added the spokesperson.

Atlantic Fire & Rescue remains committed to empowering and protecting communities across Cape Town through hands-on training, donations, and partnerships with community fire brigades, local leaders, and municipal authorities.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: Together, we protect communities.
