Gugulethu Stands Strong: AFS Community Volunteers Making a Real Difference
The Gugulethu community reached out to Atlantic Fire Services (AFS) for support — and what followed was a powerful demonstration of how training, equipment, and commitment save lives.
In Ward 40, Gugulethu, AFS conducted Volunteer Firefighting Training for 30 newly committed community members, strengthening an already active local firefighting team. This training focused on fire awareness, fire safety, and the correct use of fire extinguishers, equipping residents to respond immediately when fires break out.
The impact of this programme is already clear.
In the past two weeks alone, the existing Gugulethu volunteer team successfully contained three fires.
These rapid responses prevented fires from spreading through densely packed homes — protecting families, property, and lives. This is living proof that early intervention by trained community members works.
Gugulethu is a high-risk area, with many residents living in informal structures where fires spread rapidly and access for emergency vehicles is often limited. In these conditions, community firefighters are the first and most critical line of defence.
On the Ground – AFS Leadership
Commander Paul Krüger from Atlantic Fire Services addressed the community:
“We are in Ward 40, Gugulethu, in Cape Town, with team leaders, community leaders, and the community. We are busy with our Volunteer Firefighting Program, which entails fire awareness, fire safety, and fire extinguisher training. We already have a team in this area.
Brave ladies contained three fires over the last month, using eight fire extinguishers. However, we have a significant need for more fire extinguishers in this area. There are a lot of high-risk areas.
We would now like to hand over 20 fire extinguishers, as well as six first aid kits and 20 reflector jackets for the community to use in the teams that they are forming now.”
As part of this initiative, AFS officially handed over:
- 20 fire extinguishers
- 6 first aid kits
- 20 reflector safety jackets
These resources will be deployed across identified high-risk zones, ensuring faster response times and safer operations for volunteers.
Voices from the Community
Ward Committee Member, Ward 40, Gugulethu, shared her gratitude:
We had three devastating fires last month, and I would like to say thank you to AFS for the fire extinguishers that helped us very much to contain these fires.
If you guys have more, please give more. We need all the help that can save people from fire. As we are staying in shacks, we are in a very dangerous situation.
We need any help. Thank you very much.”
Her words reflect the daily reality faced by many families — and the urgent need for ongoing fire safety support in informal settlements.
Committed. Dedicated. Empowered.
The Gugulethu volunteer firefighters are not just trained — they are proven. Their actions over the past weeks demonstrate courage, responsibility, and an unwavering commitment to protecting their neighbours.
Salute to Gugulethu.
Together with Atlantic Fire Services, this community is showing that when people are empowered with knowledge and tools, tragedy can be prevented and lives can be saved.
Protecting our communities. Protecting our people. Protecting our families.
