Imizamo Yethu Training Day – Empowering Communities Through Education and Engagement

Atlantic Fire Services (AFS) hosted an inspiring and impactful training day in Imizamo Yethu, focused on strengthening fire awareness, improving community readiness, and planting the seeds of safety education from a young age.

The day brought together 30 dedicated community volunteers alongside local children, creating a powerful environment where learning, responsibility, and community pride were shared across generations. While the volunteers participated in practical fire awareness, fire safety, and fire extinguisher training, the children were included through a dedicated fire safety talk designed to help them understand the dangers of fire and how to react safely in an emergency.

A highlight of the day was the children’s opportunity to explore the AFS Unimog Fire Truck. For many, this was their first close-up experience with emergency response equipment. The interaction sparked curiosity and excitement, while also helping children associate firefighters and emergency services with safety, trust, and protection. Experiences like these play a crucial role in building confidence and awareness, ensuring that children grow up with a basic understanding of fire safety and the importance of responding calmly and responsibly.

For the adult volunteers, the training focused on practical skills and preparedness. Volunteers were guided through fire awareness principles, safety hazards commonly found in informal settlements, and the correct use of fire extinguishers. This hands-on training equips community members to act quickly and decisively during the critical first minutes of a fire, helping to prevent small incidents from turning into devastating disasters.

Imizamo Yethu remains a high-risk area for fires, particularly during the dry and windy summer months. By combining adult training with youth education, AFR continues to strengthen community resilience from multiple angles. Volunteers become frontline responders, while children become informed and aware, reducing panic and unsafe behaviour during emergencies.

Training days like this reflect Atlantic Fire Services’ broader mission: to empower communities through knowledge, engagement, and practical support. By investing in people — young and old — AFS is helping communities protect their homes, their families, and their future.

Empowering our communities starts with education, engagement, and giving our children the tools to stay safe.
