Khayelitsha Ward 91 Training Day | From Devastation to Preparedness

We were on the ground in Khayelitsha, Ward 91, following a devastating fire that destroyed 80 homes — a stark reminder of how quickly lives can change in informal settlements.

In response, we brought together 60 committed community members for hands-on training in fire awareness, fire safety, and the optimal use of 9kg DCP fire extinguishers. This is where real change begins — equipping communities with the knowledge and confidence to act in those critical first moments.

To strengthen local response, we issued 30 fire extinguishers and 14 first aid kits, which have now been placed with six dedicated teams across six informal settlements. These teams are now ready to respond immediately when fires break out — helping to contain fires before they spread and cause further devastation.

As Atlantic Fire Services, we are committed to fighting the scourge of informal settlement fires — not only through response, but through prevention, training, and ongoing support.

During the day, we also engaged with key stakeholders, including the Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Gift of the Givers, councillors, and community leaders. Together, we discussed the urgent challenges facing high-risk communities and reaffirmed a shared commitment to strengthen fire readiness across the Western Cape.

These partnerships are critical. Real impact happens when communities, government, and organisations stand together with one goal — to protect lives and homes.

Day by day, we continue to empower communities with the tools, training, and support they need to protect themselves.

Together, we are building safer, stronger communities.
